Planning a shoot around golden hour

Any golden-hour calculator will give you the time. None of them tell you what to shoot in the hours either side, or what to do when you are running late. Here is how to build a day around the light instead of just looking it up.

What a calculator gets right, and the one thing none of them do

There is no shortage of tools that will tell you exactly when golden hour falls on a given date at a given spot on earth. Sun-position apps have had that solved for years, down to the minute. What none of them do is the next bit: build the rest of your running order around the answer. They tell you when; they do not tell you what to shoot in the hours before it, what to do if the shoot before it overruns, or what happens to the golden-hour shot itself if the day does not get there in time.

Golden hour is shorter than it feels like it should be, and it moves every week

As a working rule, golden hour — the stretch where the sun sits low enough to warm the light but is still above the horizon — runs roughly twenty minutes to just over an hour, depending on latitude and season: shorter nearer the equator, longer at higher latitudes in summer. It is also not fixed on the calendar — it shifts by a few minutes most days as the year turns, faster around the equinoxes than around the solstices. A time that was right for a shoot in April is not right for the same shoot in June, and "roughly 6pm" is not a plan.

Pin the shot that needs the light; build the rest of the day around it

The useful move is not memorising the sunset time. It is pinning the one shot that genuinely needs that light to the window it needs, then letting the rest of the day arrange itself around that fixed point. A shot pinned this way holds its place in the running order regardless of what happens earlier in the day: if the morning runs long, the schedule absorbs the slack everywhere else and still gets you to the pinned shot at the right time. The case a calculator can never handle is the one where your day does not fit. If an earlier shot overruns badly enough that the pinned golden-hour shot is no longer reachable, the schedule does not quietly move it, drop it, or present a tidy day that was never really going to hold — it says so, in minutes: short by however many the day is actually short by. That is a more useful thing to know at 4pm on set than a sunset time was at 8am.

A worked day, built around the light

Here is what that looks like end to end — a summer exterior-and-studio day, in London, in early July, with one hero look that has to be shot in the last of the evening light.

Notice what is doing the work here. The light-critical shot is not first or last by accident — it is pinned at the one point in the day the light demands. Everything that does not care about light, like the flat lays, the studio hero and most of the lifestyle looks, is scheduled around it on purpose rather than in whatever order was easiest to write down. That ordering is the entire difference between having a sunset time and having a day.

What to shoot in the hours that are not golden hour

Most of your shoot day, even one built around a golden-hour hero shot, is not golden hour — and that is the point. Anything that does not care about natural light — studio product work under strobe, flat lays, most interiors — should be scheduled in the middle of the day precisely because it is the most forgiving block: if it overruns, that time has to come from somewhere, and daylight hours with no light preference are exactly the place the day can afford it. A shot’s daylight preference — golden hour, blue hour, midday, after dark, or no preference at all — is what tells the schedule which of these blocks it belongs in, and only the shots that actually have a preference need pinning.

When the pin does not fit

A day built around the light still occasionally does not work — a location falls through, hair and makeup runs an hour over, the light changes faster than forecast. The value of pinning a shot to the real window for that day rather than a half-remembered clock time is that when the day genuinely will not make it, the schedule can say so precisely, in minutes, rather than either silently succeeding on a plan that was never really going to hold, or failing without saying by how much. That is the difference between a tool that tells you the time and one that tells you whether your day actually works.

None of this replaces checking the forecast. A golden-hour window is a fact about where the sun is, not a promise of clear sky — cloud cover, haze and rain still decide what the light actually looks like on the day.

How long does golden hour actually last?

It varies by latitude and season — commonly somewhere between twenty minutes and just over an hour — and it shifts by a few minutes most days through the year, so a time that worked for a shoot in spring will not be right for the same shoot in summer.

What happens if my shoot runs late and the golden-hour shot will not fit any more?

A schedule built around the real golden-hour window for that day can tell you exactly how many minutes short the day is, rather than quietly dropping the shot or pretending the plan still holds, which is the only useful warning to get before you are standing in the field.

Do I need to know the exact sunset time, or can I estimate?

For anything you are pinning a shot to, use the real time for that date and location rather than a rough memory of last month’s sunset — golden hour moves by several minutes a week through spring and autumn, and a rough estimate is often wrong by more than the window is long.
