Watermarks

Your watermark on every photograph the client sees

Make a mark from your studio’s name or logo, choose it for a gallery, and Latentshoot puts it on a copy of every photograph. The files you uploaded are never marked. Watermarks are on every plan, the free one included.

The Protection tab of a gallery. Five choices along the top — No watermark, Proofs, Studio logo, Embargo and Only for this gallery — with Embargo selected, described as wide capitals, repeated, at 24% opacity, with buttons to edit it for the whole team or change it for this gallery only. Below, a large preview of a photograph of a woman sitting on a rooftop above a hazy city, with “Northlight · Not for publication” repeated diagonally across it.
A repeated mark for a job under embargo. The preview is drawn the way the mark will be on the client’s copies.

The mark

Your words or your logo, kept for the whole team

Set the words in one of four typefaces (Grotesque, Wide capitals, Didone or Didone italic), or use your logo in white, in black or in its own colours. A PNG with a transparent background works best.

Put it in any of nine places or repeat it across the whole picture. Set its size, opacity and margin; a centred or repeated mark can also be angled. Size is the mark’s width as a share of the photograph’s, as in Lightroom. A soft shadow keeps it readable over a bright sky or a white wall.

Save it under Account, in Watermarks, and any gallery on the team can use it.

Account, on the Watermarks tab, headed Team watermarks with a New watermark button. The first saved mark, Proofs, previewed on a light and a dark plate: wide capitals at the bottom right at 72% opacity, used in 3 places, with Edit and Duplicate, and a line reading “To delete it, choose another mark wherever it is used.” The next mark begins below it.
Each mark is shown on a light and a dark plate, with how many places use it. One that is in use cannot be deleted until those places choose another.

Where it goes

One mark for the gallery, another for a set or a photograph

Each gallery has a Protection tab. Choose a team watermark, no watermark, or a mark made for that gallery only. A set can have a different mark or none, and a single photograph can have its own, which wins over its set’s.

Two switches decide where the mark appears: On the photographs in the gallery, which covers the grid, the full-screen view and the cover, and On downloaded photographs. Both start on.

After you apply it

The photographs are marked while you get on with something else

Press Apply watermark and the marking carries on without the page open, including for photographs added later and for edits you show from Develop. The tab counts the photographs done, and a photograph whose marked copy is not ready yet waits off the client’s page rather than appearing without it.

The client’s gallery shows copies at 2,048 pixels on the long edge. Where full-size downloads are allowed, on Pro and Studio, the full-size copy is marked the first time the client asks for it, which takes a few seconds. A group download waits for every marked copy it needs before the link is sent.

Where it stops

What a watermark does not do

A watermark discourages reuse. It does not stop anybody taking a screenshot, and a gallery that marks the page but not the downloads hands out files without the mark. The Protection tab says so when the switches are set that way.

A watermark is on the picture. Your name as its creator and your copyright notice go into the file’s details as well, on every marked copy, and are set on the gallery’s Delivery tab. Your name in every file.

The marked copies are stored beside the photographs and count against your storage. If the storage fills up part-way, the marking stops, keeps what it has done and tells you. Free some space or add storage, and it carries on from the Protection tab.

Questions

About watermarks

Does the watermark change my original files?

No. The client is given a marked copy. The file you uploaded is never changed, and your own screens, Develop and Analyse use the unmarked photograph.

Which plans have watermarks?

Every plan, the free one included. The marked copies count against your storage like the rest of the gallery. Full-size downloads, marked or not, are on Pro and Studio.

Can I mark the gallery page but let the client download clean files?

Yes. The two are separate switches under Where the mark goes, On the photographs in the gallery and On downloaded photographs. The tab reminds you that anybody who can download from that gallery can then get the photographs without the mark.

What happens when I change the team watermark?

Every gallery that uses it is marked again, starting about a minute after your last change, so a few adjustments in a row are one pass. The client sees the previous mark until each new copy is ready.
